- Caring for a new baby is a challenge for any parent, but even more so when your baby is in the NICU. It's natural to feel overwhelmed. So how can you balance your time in the NICU with responsibilities at home? For starters, ask for and accept help, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Family and friends want to help, but don't always know how. Let them know what would be most helpful, whether that means caring for other children, carpooling, cooking meals, or running errands. Even though it can be hard to leave your baby, it's important to take care of the other parts of your life too. If you have children at home, be open and honest with them about what's happening. Find ways to let them help out. The care team, a social worker, or a child life specialist, can provide guidance and support for siblings. Juggling work and dealing with finances can be stressful when your baby's in the nick queue for an extended stay. Time off from your job, eating on the go, gas and parking expenses, can all add up. Talk to your employer about any options for taking time off from work as needed, or changing your schedule temporarily. Your social worker may be able to connect you with financial assistance, and resources like inexpensive places to sleep nearby. With everything going on, it can be hard to keep concerned family and friends updated on your baby's progress. Some parents find it helpful to use social media, or a website, that lets loved ones follow how your baby is doing. Consider asking a friend or family member to keep everyone updated for you. Balancing NICU visits with home life takes some getting used to. Remember that you're not alone. The NICU team can help you get the support you need, so that you can care for yourself and your whole family.
